As research continues in animal use we have a lot to learn and understand about this powerful herb and its healing effects for our pets, so here are some starting points for you to understand some of the science and role it plays in your pets system.
Your pets ECS (endocannabinoid system) is systemic , it's everywhere and all through their system. Their natural messenger cannabinoids are anandamide and 2-AG, anandamide's effects occur in the central or peripheral nervous system. Their main cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system are the CB 1 and CB 2 receptors that are naturally occurring (endogenous) receptors concentrated in areas of the brain and the peripheral nervous system., this system of receptors and internal ligands are chemical signals that bind with those receptors that modify the disease processes. These cannabinoid molecules found in cannabis are exogenous ligands to the CBD receptor family anandamide (a naturally occurring messenger cannabinoid or neurotransmitter) so it binds to more cannabinoid receptors and are found naturally inside the brain and body. Are you still with me? So we are augmenting the endocannabinoids that we produce internally and asking that receptor system to respond in a positive way to modify that physiology in certain conditions.
In therapeutic use, CBD alone is less effective than the whole plant as it lacks the secondary cannabinoids that are in the resin offering the entourage effect. In 2001 John McPartland and Russo published a paper in the Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics applying the “entourage” concept to the plant itself. “Good evidence shows that secondary compounds in cannabis may enhance the beneficial effects of THC... and reduce THC-induced anxiety cholinergic deficits, and immunosuppression,” they wrote. “Cannabis terpenoids and flavonoids may also increase cerebral blood flow, enhance cortical activity, kill respiratory pathogens, and provide anti-inflammatory activity.”
Our pets fully experience the "entourage" concept as well, I look forward to sharing more next week!
